What is Handwriting analysis?
Handwriting Analysis is the study of graphic elements of communication made by hand (handwriting, cursive, printing, doodles, etc.) and their interpretations.
The field of “Graphology” literally means the study of writing. Although there are 6 domains of Graphology, the AAHA concentrates on the original and main practice of behavioral and personality assessment by how and what is written.

How does Handwriting analysis work?
Handwriting Analysis is behavioral analysis of written expression. Imagine your handwritten page as a snapshot in time of who you are when that message was written. It is a written expression of you. It reveals how you behave, your habits and preferences, your intelligence, your social skills, your coping skills, and your motivations towards success. By applying the elements of space, form, movement, and specific indicators, the skilled graphologist can get quite an extensive profile of the writer.
What does the organization AAHA do?
American Association of Handwriting Analysts (AAHA) is a non-profit 501.c.3 organization, incorporated in Illinois, and has been in existences since 1962. We are dedicated to promoting the field of graphology. We provide a forum for networking, education, exposure, experience, and ethics regarding handwriting analysis amongst our membership. We also provide a forum for exploration and research, continuing education, and practice in the field of graphology for all our members.
We offer online meetings for our national group and local meetings for our regional groups, and we sponsor a bi-annual convention. Additionally, our members have access to our extensive graphology library, and we issue a quarterly newsletter.
AAHA also offers certification in graphology. Our certification is not based on any one school of training, nor of any one method of graphology (so it is not a diploma upon graduation.) It is a comprehensive examination of your knowledge and application of graphology that meets our high standards and ethics.

What is the Difference Between a "Graphologist" and a "Document Examiner?"
A Graphologist studies the handwriting to develop a personality and behavioral profile of the writer. A Document Examiner does forensic examination for signature and writing authenticity in a court of law.
How is Handwriting Analysis Used?
Handwriting analysis (graphology) is used quite frequently in business today. The major areas include:
- personal assessment,
- compatibility and teamwork assessment,
- career guidance (for college selection, or practical career choices),
- human resource candidate selection (a non-discriminatory method),
- statement analysis (police work),
- threat assessment,
- psychological and behavioral profiling,
- jury selection,
- and more!
What is the Difference in Graphology Schools?
There are two basic methods, or schools of thought, for learning Graphology. We at AAHA respect and use both. Our group meetings allow us to learn from each other in this regard, blending both schools of handwriting analysis.
Trait Stroke Graphology is a method by which specific strokes are learned and applied to specific meanings. It is a matter of focusing on the individual elements, then expanding that focus outward to look at the big picture.
Gestalt (Holistic) Graphology is a method that looks at the big picture, and then narrows its focus to observe the individual elements. Rather than study each element with implied interpretations, Gestalt applies theory and principles regarding space, form and movement in its interpretations.
Both methods arrive at the same conclusions.
Here's an easy way for you to decide which method works best for you:
Look at the lower case "m" in your handwriting. If the tops of the "m" are rounded, then you are a cumulative thinker and layering the individual elements of the Trait Stroke Method are for you! If the tops of your "m" are more pointed than round, you are an analytical thinker and the Gestalt Method of applying theories and precepts would work best for you.
